Asthma

Bronchial asthma is a common disease affecting 10-20 per cent of the population. There is evidence that the prevalence of asthma is increasing.

Asthma means twitchy airways! These narrowed airways may lead to coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath, symptoms often being worse at night.

Invasion of allergens into our daily life is the prime cause for it. Increasing industrialisation and spreading urbanisation are the provoking factors for it. Surprisingly, in a majority of the cases, allopathic drugs such as beta-antagonists, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs often cause acute attacks of asthma. It is often aggravated by non-specific factors such as cold air, tobacco smoke, dust and acrid fumes, respiratory viral infection and emotional stress.

There are two types of asthma—extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic asthma occurs in the younger age group. Patients are usually sensitive to pollen, house mice, feathers, food, fur, and drugs and have a family history of similar sensitivities. Exposure to the precipitating factor causes an inflammatory allergic reaction in the mucous membrane. Intrinsic asthma tends to occur in older patients. It is a chronic condition. It has no apparent allergic cause or family history. This type of asthma is precipitated by bronchial infections, chronic bronchitis, strenuous exercise, stress or anxiety.

Dietary Treatments for Asthma

  • Avoid fried and processed foods.
  • Avoid food such as rice, curds, buttermilk, sugar, lentils, and heavy milk products like cheese, which has natural tendency to produce the phlegm or to accumulate the mucus.
  • Drink boiled water in plenty, avoid over eating, take light dinner one hour before going to bed, avoid fruits such as guava, papaya, watermelon and banana.

Respiratory Allergies

Chronic Cold / Cough

Chronic cold and the flu (influenza) are contagious infections that affect the respiratory system. Both are airborne illnesses, spread through coughing and sneezing. Colds typically are confined to the upper respiratory system—the nose and throat—but the flu affects the lungs and in severe cases may cause death, especially in senior citizens, young children, and those with a compromised immune system.

Both the Chronic cold and the flu are typically caused by viruses.

Sneezing

Sneezing may be annoying, but it is actually a protective mechanism that helps expel allergens and irritants out of your body. Allergies, animal dander, smoke, mold, dust, wood dust, pollen and other such irritants are the most common causes of sneezing. Cold weather, changes in humidity and temperature, rain water, strong smells, food allergies, certain drugs and other such factors also can cause sneezing.

Sneezing is often accompanied by issues like lack of concentration, fatigue, runny nose, nasal irritation, and red eyes. Sneezing is not usually a serious problem but if it occurs persistently, it can be frustrating.

Phlegm

Phlegm often accompanies colds and other upper respiratory infections. While not a serious health problem, if phlegm is not treated timely, it can clog and irritate the bronchial tubes and in turn cause a secondary upper respiratory infection.

The presence of phlegm is usually indicated by a constant need for throat clearing, constant cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, feeling weak and, in some cases, fever. Phlegm tends to collect and congest in the chest and throat and is usually expelled through coughing.

Phlegm contains the bacteria, virus or inflammatory cells produced in response to an infection. In addition to infections such as the common cold, flu and bronchitis, phlegm can be caused by an allergic reaction to irritants such as in asthma and hay fever, damaged vocal cords, and excessive smoking.

Dealing with phlegm can be incredibly frustrating and seemingly never ending.

Post Nasal Drip

Only when your body produces more mucus than usual or the mucus is thicker than normal does it become more noticeable. Excess mucus can come out the front of your nose in the form of a runny nose. When the mucus runs down the back of the nose to the throat, it's called postnasal drip.

Postnasal drip creates an annoying feeling that makes you want to constantly clear your throat. Because the feeling of the liquid in your throat is irritating and contains inflammatory substances, postnasal drip also can trigger a cough, which often gets worse at night. In fact, postnasal drip is the most common cause of chronic cough. Excess mucus running down your throat may also make you feel hoarse and give you a sore throat.

If the mucus plugs up the Eustachian tube -- the tube that connects the throat to the middle ear -- it can lead to a painful ear infection. When mucus blocks the sinus passages, it can lead to a sinus infection.

Itchy / Watery Eyes

Eye allergies — red, itchy, watery eyes that are bothered by the same irritants that cause sneezing and a runny nose among seasonal allergy sufferers — are very common.

In addition to having symptoms of sneezing, congestion and a runny nose, most of these allergy sufferers also experience itchy eyes, watery eyes, red eyes and swollen eyelids.

And in some cases, eye allergies can play a role in conjunctivitis (pink eye) and other eye infections.

Normally harmless substances that cause problems for individuals who are predisposed to allergic reactions are called allergens. The most common airborne allergens that cause eye allergies are pollen, mold, dust and pet dander.

Eye allergies also can be caused by reactions to certain cosmetics or eye drops, including artificial tears used for treating dry eyes that contain preservatives.

Humming Sound in Ears

Many people experience an occasional ringing (or roaring, hissing, buzzing, or tinkling) in their ears. The sound usually lasts only a few minutes. Ringing in the ears that does not get better or go away is called tinnitus. You may hear a sound, such as a ringing or roaring, that does not come from your surroundings (nobody else can hear it). The sound may keep time with your heartbeat, it may keep pace with your breathing, it may be constant, or it may come and go. Tinnitus is most common in people older than age 40. Men have problems with tinnitus more often than women.

Heavy Head / Migraine

A migraine is a specific and severe type of headache in which 3/4 of sufferers are women and only 1/4 are men. Migraines come in a variety of types but commonly experienced symptoms are severe pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, feeling hot or cold and vomiting. Some variations to migraines include only vision distortions/splintered vision but no pain, or they can mimic a one sided stroke. Migraine is a neurovascular problem meaning that the neurologic controls of the blood vessels is wrong. Caffeine often helps migraines because it shrinks blood vessels for the short term. People often tell me that their headaches are genetic – that their mother or sister has had migraines.

Patients with migraines often have tension headaches as well. Tension headaches can be both severe and frequent. They often feel like a tight band around the head. The neck and shoulder muscles feel tight and exhausted; the head may feel heavy and difficult to hold up.
