Pain Management
Joint Pains
Joint pain can be caused by a number of issues, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, bursitis, tendinitis or a strain, sprain or other injury affecting the ligaments, bursae or tendons surrounding a joint.
It can occur in any part of the body but is most common in the knees, shoulders and hips. The pain can range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by swelling and stiffness in one or more joints.
Severe joint pain, especially when caused by degenerative conditions like arthritis, needs proper diagnosis and treatment.
The main symptom of this disease is severe pain in the affected joints. The tissues in and around the joints become inflamed and movement of the joint becomes extremely painful. Untreated arthritis may lead to permanent deformity of the affected joints.
Lower Back Pain
Low back pain is one of the most common pain disorders today .It is a chronic condition characterized by a persistent dull or sharp pain per the lower back. It may be also associated with burning, stiffness, numbness or tingling with the pain shooting down the buttocks and the legs.
When we stand, the lower back functions to hold most of the weight of the body. When we bend, extend or rotate at the waist, the lower back is involved in the movement. Low back ache is often precipitated by moving, lifting objects or twisting of the waist. Severe pain in the low back can be quite debilitating to patients. Pain in the lower back restricts activity and reduces work capacity and quality of enjoyment of everyday living and turns daily life into a misery.
One of the common causes for the backache is poor posture habit. Balanced posture decreases stress on your back by keeping the muscles, bones and other supporting parts in their natural position. Any change from normal spinal curve can stress or pull muscles. This leads to increased muscle contraction, which causes pain. Low back pain can result due to health problems like osteoporosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis. Sprain or strain of muscles or ligaments in the area can also manifest in low back pain. Other possible causes include fibromyalgia and benign or malignant tumors. A fall or blow to the back can strain or tear tissues around the spine, or even break a bone leading to back pain. Lack of exercise or incorrect exercise can also lead to low back pain. Too much weight or overweight also is a cause of low back pain.
Cervical Pain
Spondylosis is a spinal degeneration or deformity of joints of two or more vertebrae, which occurs with aging. Cervical Spondylosis is the common degeneration of cervical spine that affects the vertebral bodies and inter-vertebral disks of the neck and the nerve roots or spinal cord of the spinal canal. Spondylosis often advances with age and increases at multiple interspaces. In ayurveda the condition is known as ˜Griva Sandhigata Vata.
Stiff neck can be caused due to : Use of hard or a thick pillow, activities involving prolonged raised arms, direct neck injury, improper lying or sitting postures, lifting heavy objects, heavy exercises, constant pressure over the cervical region. Improper diet can also be one of the reasons.
Due to the above said factors the joints, veins and nerves get fatigued or lose their tension. Ayurveda has an answer for this condition.
Sciatica Pain
Sciatica is known as GRIDHRASI in ayurveda. It is neuralgia or pain in the sciatica nerves. This sciatic nerve emerges from the pelvis and runs down the back of the thigh. Sciatica pains can be felt in either one leg or both legs.
True Sciatica – This is caused due to the compression of the lumbar spine nerve root. The main cause of this form of sciatica is a herniated vertebral disc in the spine.
Pseudo Sciatica – The pain caused due to the compression of the peripheral regions of the spinal nerve is pseudo or false sciatica. The patient feels the same pain in pseudo sciatica as he feels the pain caused by true sciatica.
There may be many factors which cause sciatica which depends on the nature and origin of the pain :
- If a person bends the body to unreal angles, falls from a height or meets with an accident that hurts the lower back region then he may suffer from the pain of sciatica.
- If the spinal nerve root or the spinal nerve itself gets compressed due to a herniated vertebral disc in the spine, it can be one of the major reasons of true sciatica.
- As a person grows older, there is a general wear and tear of the sciatic nerve, or the muscles supporting the sciatic nerve. This causes the nerve to get compressed, which results in pains of sciatica.
- Sometimes infections and tumors can cause exertion of the sciatic nerve and this may also be one of the causes of sciatica.
According to ayurveda, aggravation of vayu is the cause of sciatica. Sometimes, the vitiation of kapha and vata brings on the attack. Different types of sciatica pains may be felt by a person and this depends on where exactly on the sciatic nerve the pain is originating from.
