What Ayurveda says about chronic kidney disease?

According to Ayurveda urine formation starts in intestine itself although filtration takes place in kidneys. Imbalance of agni (fire element ) disturbs the process of formation and filtration of urine, Malformed urine leads to accumulation of wastes in the body. This unwanted accumulation is known as ‘ama sanchaya’ (toxin accumulation) in Ayurveda. This ‘ama’ accumulation manifests as – loss of appetite, tiredness, heaviness, puffiness around the eyes excess water in the later stages and abnormal values of Creatitnine, Urea ,GFR e.t.c. On the basis of different factors, damage at different levels of filtration apparatus can take place.

What is Chronic Kidney disease in Modern science?

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) refers to an irreversible deterioration in kidney function which classically develops over a period of years. It has multiple causes and results in severe attenuation of nephron (key unit of kidney) number and function . This leads to reduction of kidney mass causing structural and functional hypertrophy (enlargement) of surviving nephrons. Eventually, these adaptations prove to be inadequate resulting in sclerosis (hardening) of the surviving nephrons and further leads to end stage kidney disease (kidney failure). At this stage one needs dialysis(artificial filtering) or kidney transplant to survive.

Who is at risk of getting CKD?

The following conditions make an individual more prone to get the disease: Family history of heritable kidney disease, High blood pressure, Diabetes, Autoimmune disease,Older age, Past episode of acute kidney disease.

How we treat Chronic kidney disease?

We have treated a variety of cases where the patient was suffering from chronic kidney disease alone or in conjunction with Diabetes, Blood pressure etc. In some patients CKD was just a part of other major diseases like SLE , Ankylosing Spondylitis, Scleroderma, e.t.c. If the patient has started undergoing dialysis only recently then the chances of recovery are reasonably good. We focus on digestion of ‘ama’ (toxin) by increasing ‘agni’ (metabolism). This is done by using medicines which are having fire enhancing qualities . These medicines are further processed according to the status of disease and body constitution of the patient. After assessment of patient’s metabolic status (Agni), the medicines are prescribed along with some dietary and lifestyle changes. There is no set medicine and the formulation will vary from patient to patient even when they are suffering from exactly the same condition.

Dietary changes

Lifestyle changes

To further assist the metabolic process some dietary changes are advised to our patients. We advise avoiding foods which take long to digest like curd, lentils, dairy, non veg, sweets and refined food. They should include papaya, khichari (gruel), porridge, diluted butter milk, veg soup ,drinking water processed with berberis/cumin seeds e.t.c. Avoid drinking excess water. By excess it is meant drinking water even when one is not thirsty.

  • Hot water fomentation over the kidney area is sometimes advised.
  • Vajrasana (Thunderbolt Pose) after food is good.
  • Avoid daytime sleeping.
  • Dinner should be very light preferably soups.

Ayurveda for Liver treatment

The liver is called Yakrit in Ayurveda. Pitta is the predominant humor of the liver. Most liver disorders are aggravated conditions of Pitta. Excessive bile production or a blockage in the flow of bile usually indicates high pitta, which in turn affects the agni or enzyme activities responsible for absorption, digestion and metabolism.

Kumbha Kamala is the classical description if cirrhosis of liver in Ayurveda.

“|| Kaalantarath khareebhutah kruchrasyaat khumba kamala ||”
